SLB careers, Halliburton jobs and Baker Hughes careers are where many oil and gas careers start. The three big oilfield service companies hire graduates every year as field engineers, service operators and technicians, who run the company’s equipment at the wellsite for oil and gas operators. The short answer on how to get in: apply on each company’s own career site, apply for one role at a time, be ready for rotation work in remote places, and never pay anyone who promises you a job. All three companies say they never ask candidates for money.
This guide explains what field roles involve, how each company hires, what pay data says, and where to find their current jobs.
What a field engineer does
A field engineer at a service company plans and runs jobs at the wellsite: drilling services, wireline logging, cementing, coiled tubing, well testing, completions or fracturing. SLB describes its field teams as people who “plan, run, and report on-site operations, applying engineering expertise directly at the wellsite”, operate its technology in the field, coordinate people and equipment, and maintain field equipment (SLB).
In practice that means:
- Long hours and rotation. You work where the well is: a land rig, an offshore platform or a remote base.
- Responsibility early. SLB says its field teams take on “real responsibility from day one” (SLB).
- Safety first. You will collect certificates such as H2S, BOSIET and well control as you go. See our offshore safety certificates guide.
- A route into the industry. Many engineers spend a few years in the field, then move to technical, sales, operations management or office roles.
Not every graduate job is a field job. All three companies also hire graduates in engineering, manufacturing, digital, supply chain and business roles.
SLB careers
SLB (formerly Schlumberger) says it works in more than 100 countries, with people from more than 170 nationalities (SLB). Its careers site groups jobs into categories such as field operations and services, engineering and manufacturing, digital technology, HSE, and internships (SLB careers).
How SLB hires
SLB says its process typically includes an application review, one or more interviews and a final decision, with steps that vary by role and location (SLB). Points that matter:
- One application at a time. SLB asks candidates to focus on one application; to apply for another role, you withdraw the first one in your account.
- Talent network. If nothing fits, you can join SLB’s talent network or upload your CV for suggested roles.
- Fraud warning. SLB says it will never ask for money at any stage of recruitment. Genuine emails end in @slb.com, @careers.slb.com or @esign.slb.com, and genuine pages sit under slb.com (SLB).
SLB field engineer trainee and aptitude tests
Many candidates search for the “Schlumberger field engineer aptitude test”. SLB’s own hiring page does not publish details of any test, so treat online “test answer” packs with caution. Prepare instead for what the role needs: basic engineering maths and physics, mechanical and electrical reasoning, safety awareness, and clear answers about why you want field work and how you handle pressure and long hours.
SLB internships
SLB says its internships span operations, technology, digital and business, involve hands-on projects, and that many employees started as interns (SLB). If you are still a student, an internship is the most direct way in.
SLB’s jobs were not listed on RigJobsDirect on 16 October 2026, so search them on careers.slb.com.
Halliburton jobs
Halliburton says it has more than 48,000 employees of 140 nationalities, more than 20 training facilities worldwide, and a fast-track career development programme (Halliburton). Its careers site has a section for graduates and covers field operations, manufacturing, engineering and support roles (Halliburton).
On RigJobsDirect on 16 October 2026 there were 272 open Halliburton jobs (Halliburton jobs). Examples that day:
- Coiled tubing service operators, specialists and supervisors in Ahmadi, Kuwait
- Testing and subsea service specialists in Broussard, United States
- Completion tool technicians in New Iberia, United States
- Processing facility supervisors in Basra, Iraq
- Cementing operator assistants in Perth and Roma, Australia
Halliburton jobs with no experience
Entry-level field roles at Halliburton often have titles like “Operator Assistant I” or “Service Operator I”. Read each ad for the exact requirements: field ads may ask for a driving licence, a pre-employment medical or drug test, and willingness to work long hours away from home, rather than a degree.
Halliburton warns that neither it nor any authorised recruitment partner will ever ask for payment at any stage, including for applications, interviews, training, visas, work permits, travel or equipment. If a “Halliburton” job requires payment, it is fraudulent (Halliburton).
Baker Hughes careers
Baker Hughes is an energy technology company that makes equipment and provides services for oil and gas and industrial customers. Its global careers site is careers.bakerhughes.com.
On RigJobsDirect on 16 October 2026 there were 313 open Baker Hughes jobs (Baker Hughes jobs). They included field specialists, a completion and workover well engineer, field service engineers for centrifugal compressors, mechanical engineers in Houston, an assembler and mechanic technician in Dubai, and engineering roles in Bangalore. Baker Hughes has a large equipment business (turbines, compressors, valves, subsea structures), so many of its engineering jobs are in design, manufacturing and service rather than at the wellsite.
Other service companies worth a look
Graduate and field roles are not limited to the “big three”. On the same day RigJobsDirect listed jobs at:
- Weatherford (175 jobs): wireline field operators, pressure pumping operators, fishing and re-entry specialists (Weatherford jobs).
- NOV (408 jobs): drilling equipment manufacturing and service, including inspector trainee roles (NOV jobs).
- Nabors, Transocean and Valaris: drilling contractors for rig crew careers (Nabors, Transocean, Valaris).
You can also browse by discipline: drilling and wells (358 jobs that day) and subsurface.
Where the service company jobs are
Oilfield service companies hire where the wells are, and where their regional bases sit. On RigJobsDirect on 16 October 2026, the cities with the most open energy jobs included:
| City | Open energy jobs | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Houston | 579 | Houston jobs |
| Abu Dhabi | 341 | Abu Dhabi jobs |
| Midland | 107 | Midland jobs |
| Aberdeen | 99 | Aberdeen jobs |
| Calgary | 59 | Calgary jobs |
Houston is home to many headquarters and engineering teams, Midland is the centre of the Permian Basin, Aberdeen serves the UK North Sea, and Abu Dhabi is a Gulf hub. If you can move, applying in a busy hub gives you more chances than waiting for an opening in your home town.
Pay: what official data says
The companies do not publish standard pay scales, and pay varies by country, role and rotation. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics gives a useful benchmark:
| Occupation (US, May 2025) | Median annual pay |
|---|---|
| Petroleum engineers, all industries | $144,910 |
| Petroleum engineers, support activities for mining (oilfield services) | $126,600 |
| Petroleum engineers, oil and gas extraction (operators) | $180,080 |
| Service unit operators (oil and gas) | $58,160 |
| Roustabouts | $46,960 |
Sources: BLS petroleum engineers, BLS oil and gas workers.
BLS also projects only 2% growth for petroleum engineers from 2025 to 2035, slower than average. Field service jobs still open up every year as people move on, but expect competition for graduate places.
Field roles may add job bonuses, overtime or rotation allowances on top of base pay. Ask how pay is built before you accept.
How to apply: a checklist
- Use the official career sites: careers.slb.com, careers.halliburton.com and careers.bakerhughes.com. Every job on RigJobsDirect links to the employer’s own page.
- Pick one role per company and tailor your CV to it: list relevant field, lab or project work, safety training and your driving licence.
- Be honest about mobility. Say which countries you can work in and whether you can do rotation work.
- Set job alerts on the career sites and on RigJobsDirect for your location.
- Check every contact. Recruiters use company email domains. Any request for money is a scam; our guide on avoiding recruitment scams lists the warning signs.
If you are an Indian graduate, the engineering centres of these companies in India are often an easier first step than a job abroad. See our guide to oil and gas jobs abroad for Indian engineers.
Frequently asked questions
Is SLB the same as Schlumberger?
Yes. Schlumberger now operates as SLB, and its careers site is careers.slb.com.
Can I apply for several SLB jobs at once?
SLB asks candidates to focus on one application at a time. To apply for a different role, withdraw your previous application in your account first.
Do Halliburton or SLB charge fees for training or visas?
No. Both companies say they never ask candidates for money at any stage of recruitment. Any such request is fraud.
How much does a field engineer earn?
It depends on the country, company and rotation. As a US benchmark, BLS reports median pay of $126,600 for petroleum engineers in oilfield support services in May 2025.
Do I need a petroleum engineering degree?
Not always. Field engineer roles often accept mechanical, electrical, chemical and other engineering degrees, and operator roles may not need a degree at all. Check each ad.
