Before you can work offshore in the Gulf, you will almost always need safety training certificates. Some onshore job ads ask for them too. Job ads often list them as short codes: BOSIET, T-BOSIET, HUET, FOET, H2S, NEBOSH, IWCF.
This guide explains what each one is, how long it lasts, and how to check that a certificate and a training centre are real. The operator of each site decides what you need. So always read the job ad and ask the employer before you pay for a course.
The certificates at a glance
| Certificate | What it is for | Valid for |
|---|---|---|
| BOSIET (with EBS or CA-EBS) | Basic offshore safety and emergency training for new starters | 4 years, then FOET |
| T-BOSIET | Tropical version of BOSIET, for warm-water regions | 4 years, then T-FOET |
| FOET / T-FOET | Refresher for BOSIET or T-BOSIET | 4 years |
| HUET / T-HUET | Helicopter underwater escape training | 4 years (T-HUET) |
| Basic H2S | Hydrogen sulphide gas hazards and escape | 2 years |
| MIST | Basic offshore hazards for new starters | 4 years |
| NEBOSH IGC | Health and safety management qualification | No expiry stated |
| IWCF well control | Drilling well control, by level | Level 2: 5 years; Levels 3 and 4: 2 years |

BOSIET and T-BOSIET
BOSIET stands for Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training. OPITO, the industry skills body that sets the standard, says it is for people new to the offshore oil and gas industry, or returning to it (OPITO). The course covers:
- offshore hazards and safety rules
- helicopter safety and escape after a ditching
- sea survival and first aid
- fire fighting and self-rescue in smoke
The BOSIET with EBS standard has 21 guided learning hours. The maximum gap between BOSIET and the refresher course, FOET, is 4 years. You need an offshore medical certificate, or you complete medical screening at the training centre (OPITO).
T-BOSIET is the tropical version. OPITO says it is for people new to offshore work “in a tropical environment”. It has 19 guided learning hours, and the maximum gap before the T-FOET refresher is 4 years. OPITO lists approved T-BOSIET centres in many countries, including the UAE (OPITO).
Which version do Gulf operators ask for? It depends on the operator and the site, and we could not find an official list. Check the job ad, and ask the employer before you book.
EBS and CA-EBS
You will see “with EBS” or “with CA-EBS” after the course name. Both refer to the emergency breathing system you are trained to use in a helicopter. OPITO’s BOSIET with EBS standard is for people who will be given a rebreather system on helicopter flights; CA-EBS is a compressed air system (OPITO). Ask the employer which one you need.
FOET and T-FOET: the refresher
When your BOSIET or T-BOSIET is close to expiry, you take a shorter refresher course. T-FOET is open to people with a valid BOSIET, T-BOSIET, FOET or T-FOET certificate. It has 7 guided learning hours and is valid for 4 years (OPITO).
Because T-FOET needs an in-date certificate, an expired one usually means taking the full course again. Plan your refresher before your certificate runs out, especially if you are on rotation.
HUET and T-HUET
HUET is Helicopter Underwater Escape Training. OPITO says BOSIET is for people new to offshore work, while HUET is for workers who regularly travel to installations by helicopter (OPITO). The tropical version, T-HUET, has 8 hours 20 minutes of guided learning and is valid for 4 years (OPITO).
Basic H2S training
Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is a toxic gas found in some oil and gas fields. OPITO’s Basic H2S Training is for people who work, or could work, where H2S may be present. It covers the gas and its hazards, detection and breathing equipment, and emergency actions. It has 4 guided learning hours, no prerequisites, and the certificate is valid for 2 years (OPITO).
Other H2S courses exist from other training providers. If an ad says “H2S certificate”, ask which course they accept.
MIST
MIST (Minimum Industry Safety Training) introduces new starters to the hazards of offshore work. It does not replace BOSIET: OPITO says BOSIET is still mandatory before working offshore. MIST is valid for 4 years (OPITO).
NEBOSH for HSE roles
If you want to work in health, safety and environment (HSE), many job ads ask for a NEBOSH qualification. The NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) is for managers, supervisors and anyone with health and safety duties, and for people starting an HSE career. It needs at least 63 taught hours plus about 40 hours of private study, and has two assessments: an open-book exam and a practical risk assessment (NEBOSH).
Senior HSE roles may ask for the NEBOSH International Diploma or other qualifications. Read the ad.
Well control for drilling crews
Drilling roles often need a well control certificate. There are two main schemes:
- IWCF (International Well Control Forum). Level 2 is for well-site roles and is valid for 5 years. Level 3 is for equipment operators and Level 4 for supervisors; both are valid for 2 years. Level 1 has no expiry date (IWCF, IWCF programme).
- IADC WellSharp (International Association of Drilling Contractors). WellSharp is an accreditation programme for well control training providers, with courses for drilling operations staff (IADC).
Which scheme and level you need depends on your role and the operator.
How to check a certificate or a training centre is real
Employers can check certificates online, and NEBOSH says verification helps prevent fraud (NEBOSH). Protect yourself:
- Train only at an approved centre. OPITO works with more than 240 approved centres in over 50 countries. Use OPITO’s centre finder (OPITO).
- Check OPITO certificates online. OPITO’s free Certificate Validity Checker lets learners and employers check a certificate. OPITO’s free TRAIN-R app shows your training records on your phone (OPITO).
- Check NEBOSH certificates. NEBOSH certificates issued from October 2019 have a QR code, and NEBOSH runs an online verification service (NEBOSH).
- Never buy a certificate without training. If someone offers you a certificate without the course and the practical tests, it is not real. An employer that checks it will reject you.
Who pays for training?
There is no single rule. Some employers pay for your certificates or book your training. Others expect you to arrive with valid certificates, especially for contract roles. Ask before you accept an offer. Keep copies of every certificate, and note the expiry dates.
Frequently asked questions
Is T-BOSIET accepted in the Gulf?
T-BOSIET is OPITO’s tropical version of BOSIET, and OPITO lists approved T-BOSIET training centres in the UAE. Whether a site accepts T-BOSIET, BOSIET or both is decided by the operator. Check the job ad and ask the employer before you book a course.
How long is BOSIET valid?
OPITO sets a maximum interval of 4 years between BOSIET and the FOET refresher. The tropical versions follow the same 4-year cycle: T-BOSIET, then T-FOET. T-FOET itself is also valid for 4 years.
How long is an H2S certificate valid?
OPITO’s Basic H2S Training certificate is valid for 2 years. Other H2S courses exist from other providers, so ask which course your employer accepts.
How can an employer check my OPITO certificate?
OPITO has a free online Certificate Validity Checker that learners and employers can use. You can also see your own training records in OPITO’s free TRAIN-R app.
